What is the importance of art in our society? What art can do to build a better world? And what then must society provide to the art world? What does it mean to survive as an artist?
Art-making has always been equivalent of choosing a lifestyle of uncertainty. Artists survive by working with alternate currencies of favours, time and materials amongst their peers. We are resourceful and innovative, as we have to be, in order to make it through in a society not structured for our way of working and living.
However with cuts in budgets and a global financial crisis it is becoming increasingly harder to survive as an artist. This means more artistic work is being done for free. More competition amongst our peers. And more importance for defining why society needs artists, as well as artists need society.
To survive as an artist in society means to create awareness of the importance of our work. We are not talking about a “survival of the fit test”, but a proposition that we can offer society something much needed; Fearless insights into subject matters of great importance, ways of doing things differently, acknowledgment that art is a part of human heritage, and is something to fight for.

¿Cuál es la importancia del arte en nuestra sociedad? ¿que puede hacer el arte para construir un mundo mejor? Entonces ¿que debe proporcionar la sociedad al mundo del arte? ¿Qué significa sobrevivir como artista?
Decidir por el arte siempre ha sido equivalente a la elección de un estilo de vida de incertidumbre. Los artistas sobreviven trabajando con alternativas económicas de favores, tiempo y materiales entre sus pares. Somos ingeniosos e innovadores, tenemos que ser, con el fin de vivir a través de una sociedad que no está estructurada para nuestra forma de trabajar y vivir.
Sin embargo, con los recortes en los presupuestos y una crisis financiera global, es cada vez más difícil sobrevivir como artista. Esto significa un trabajo más artístico que se está haciendo de forma gratuita. Más competencia entre nuestros compañeros. Y es más importante definir por qué la sociedad necesita artistas, así como porque los artistas necesitan de la sociedad.
Para sobrevivir como artista en la sociedad significa crear conciencia de la importancia de nuestro trabajo. No estamos hablando de una "supervivencia de la prueba de ajuste", sino una propuesta que podemos ofrecer algo a la sociedad ; Ideas audaces en temas de gran importancia, formas de hacer las cosas de otra manera, el reconocimiento de que el arte es un patrimonio de la humanidad, y es algo por lo qué hay que luchar.
